The
Cake
She said, “Nana,
I want to bake you
a cake
To help cheer you
up.”
She brought her
own cake mix,
And frosting,
And wanted to do
it herself.
She’s never baked
a cake before,
But Nana said
okay.
She has a little
trouble
With the
directions.
(Reading is hard.)
Nana shows her how
to
Measure out
ingredients
And mix them
together.
It keeps her mind
off
Waiting for that
phone call
From the hospital,
Wondering if her
brother
Is going to live
or die.
This, of course,
was the idea.
The cake has a hole
in the middle,
So they fold it
over.
Frosting hides a
multitude of sins.
It’s a little
lopsided,
But everyone
agrees
It’s the best cake
they’ve ever had.
